Part-time with half the regular working hours of a full-time employee. The position is initially limited until 30.09.2025 duration within the framework of the DFG-funded project "Surface Modification of Silicon at the Nanometer Scale" according to § 2 para. 2 WissZeitVG. The possibility of a doctorate is given.

The department has many years of experience in modelling laser-material interactions and is a world leader in the development of high-precision interatomic potentials to describe laser excitation using machine learning. The group has excellent computing resources (including its own computer cluster with GPUs) and access to high performance computing facilities in Germany.


  • Development of a model to describe the femtosecond laser pulse excitation of a silicon surface on experimentally achievable length and time scales
  • The dynamics of the atomic lattice, the bonding electrons and the laser-generated free electron-hole pairs are to be determined, taking into account the electron-phonon coupling and the surface plasmons excited by the laser pulse
  • The modelling will be performed using an extension of the TTM-MD model ("two temperature model molecular dynamics") with density functional theory accuracy. After the highly parallel oriented numerical implementation of the modelling in a combined molecular dynamics continuum model, extensive simulations and a direct comparison with the experiments of the cooperation partner at the Laser Institute of the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida are planned
  • Scientific collaboration in research and teaching in the field of Theoretical Physics II


  • Completed course of academic study (Master degree) within the fiel of physics with a theoretical focus, completed with very good results. The required degree must be available by the hiring date at the latest
  • Good knowledge of English
  • Good to very good programming skills
  • Experience in density functional theory and/or molecular dynamics simulations.


  • Background in parallel computing.
  • Knowledge of solid state physics and light-matter interaction.
  • Good analytical skills
