Part-time position with 65 % of the working hours of a full-time employee within the project FOR5903, subject to authorisation, with the option of gaining a PhD degree. Fixed term-position for four years, corresponding to §2 Abs. 2 WissZeitVG

FOR5903 is a DFG Research Unit with a wide interdisciplinary and international scope, investigating different dimensions of global urbanisation processes under the novel framework of “Sustainable Rurbanity”. In the context of this project, a doctoral position is available addressing “RurbanFlows - Material flows, supply chains, and ecosystem services in rurban spaces”. The position cannot be shared. The main place of service is Witzenhausen, but extended fieldwork in India and Ghana for several months per year will be required. Fitness for service in the tropics is, therefore, mandatory.


Specifications:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Reconstruction and assessment of historical land use changes in the study regions based on archival materials and time series of satellite images
  • Surveys of actors/stakeholders and flow paths of major food and feed materials to measure and map their flows and supply chains
  • Analysis of mining systems and flows of construction materials (granite, sand) in Bengaluru and Accra, including the assessment of their governance and their environmental impact
  • Coordination of/participation in factorial field experiments at the station of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore (India) and in Accra (Ghana). Cropping experiments are carried out in collaboration with local research partners and with PhDs from other sub-projects of TRR373, aiming at flow measurements and balances of nutrients, carbon, water, and contaminants at the field scale
  • Participation in project-related seminars and workshops and in international conferences by presenting own results


Requirements:

Obligatory

  • Completed university degree in agricultural sciences or related fields
  • Fluency in English language (proven by internet-based TOEFL of at least 80 points, IELTS, or equivalent language certificate)
  • Ability and willingness to work in a dedicated, interdisciplinary team with an international and intercultural background in India, Ghana, and Germany

Desirable

  • Experience in field surveys and/or agronomic trials, experimental design, and data evaluation
  • Skills in GIS applications and mapping
  • Knowledge of complex systems approaches and methods of social-ecological systems research
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate effective collaboration with international partners.
