The University of Kassel is a modern and growing University with round about 22.000 students. The university’s wide range of expertise covers subjects in the natural, applied, cultural and social sciences.

The Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institute of Physics – Division of Experimental Physics IV (Prof. Dr. Arno Ehresmann), invites applications for the following position to be filled as soon as possible:

Research Assistant (m/f/d), EG 13 TV-H, fixed term-position, part-time (currently 20 hours per week)

Application deadline:

10.12.2024

Date of hire:

as soon as possible

vacancy number: 37911

Part-time with half the regular working hours of a full-time employee. The position is limited to one year in accordance with § 2 para. 1 WissZeitVG (qualification position in accordance with § 72 HessHG). The opportunity for a doctorate is given.

It is part of the doctoral project “Magnetic domain landscapes for lab-on-a-chip applications explored with neutron scat-tering” in collaboration with the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France. The project is scheduled to last 3 years and includes the completion of the doctorate with submission of the doctoral thesis to the University of Kassel after these 3 years. Subject to a positive interim evaluation of the project progress, the one-year contract at the University of Kassel will be followed by a further two years of contract at the ILL.. It is therefore imperative that a change of location from Kassel to Grenoble takes place after the first year. In the unlikely event that further employment by the ILL is no longer available, continued employment at the University of Kassel would be possible, provided that a positive interim assessment has taken place.

Tasks:

  • Research assistant in research and teaching in the field of experimental physics IV
  • Fabrication of magnetic layer systems via sputter deposition and their characterization using the experimental methods available in the group (VSM, L-MOKE, Kerr microscope), as well as synchrotron radiation-based methods
  • Generation of artificial domain structures by ion bombardment-induced magnetic patterning of magnetic layer systems and their characterization
  • Measurement of the stray fields originating from the domain structures
  • Clean room work e.g. optical lithography, etching techniques
  • Characterization and investigation of the samples produced in Kassel by polarized neutron scattering at the Institut Laue-Langevin (mainly in the 2nd and 3rd year)
  • Preparation and presentation of scientific results in the form of reports, conference papers and publications
  • Assistance with the research group’s teaching duties

  • Willingness to live in Kassel for the first year of the intended doctorate and the following 2 years in Grenoble
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: Fabrication of magnetic thin film systems via sputter deposition, optical lithography for the fabrication of micro- and nanostructures, characterization of magnetic thin film samples, neutron re-flectometry, relevant theories on magnetic thin film systems and their characterization and application
  • Knowledge in the field of magnetic thin-film systems, magnetic anisotropies and magnetic interface effects
  • Basic knowledge of methods for evaluating large amounts of data
  • Ability to present even complex information in an understandable way in written and spoken English
  • Graphics and text processing

Advantageous qualifications:

  • Accurate and independent working style
