Part time position with 75,00 percent of the working hours of a full-time employee. This is a fixed-term position for 3 years (corresponding to § 2 Abs. 2 WissZeitVG; opportunity for PhD project) in the project „Asymptotic preserving high order generalized upwind SBP schemes with IMEX time integration applied to kinetic transport models“ funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) within the Priority Programme SPP 2410: Hyperbolic Balance Laws in Fluid Mechanics: Complexity, Scales, Randomness (CoScaRa).

The research project:

Kinetic models describe a wide range of physical processes relevant to natural and engineering sciences where a large number of particles is involved. Compared to macroscopic fluid models describing the behavior of averaged quantities, kinetic fluid models are closer to particle descriptions. Their deeper level offers more insight into less understood phenomena, e.g. rarefied gases or compressible turbulence with extreme demands on direct numerical simulation. Major numerical challenges are high dimensionality of the given partial differential equations, nonlinearity of physically interesting collision operators, discrete preservation of asymptotic limits, and stiffness caused by multiple scales. The overall goal of this project is to devise novel, efficient numerical techniques for kinetic models which stand on firm mathematical ground regarding stability, accuracy and asymptotics.

Since this project is embedded in the DFG Priority Programme SPP 2410 which intends to join forces from different mathematical disciplines in collaborative projects in order to move forward in critical fluid mechanics applications, it also offers an ideal environment for the development of general professional and personal skills.


• Construction and implementation of numerical methods with favorable properties for kinetic transport models

• Mathematical analysis of the structure-preserving properties and the accuracy and stability of the developed methods; efficiency studies for kinetic models from applications like radiative transfer, rarefied gases and turbulence

• Presentation and scientific publication of the obtained research results


• Completed course of academic study (Master degree) in Mathematics, Scientific Computing or a related field with good to very good results. The degree required for this position must have been obtained by the starting date at the latest

• Fluency in written and spoken English

• Scientific enthusiasm, curiosity, and intrinsic motivation

Of Advantage:

• Background in Applied Mathematics (in particular Numerics) and/or Analysis of Partial Differential Equations

• Programming experience
