The Kunsthochschule is seeking an artist who can demonstrate an internationally successful, theoretically grounded artistic practice within contemporary art. S/he must be able to open up the broad spectrum of the visual arts to students in teaching based on his or her own particular interests.

The starting point of this teaching position is the diversity of contemporary artistic positions and their key aspects in a theoretically grounded and research based artistic practice. In addition to extensive practical experience, the applicant must also have a deep understanding of contemporary discourses in the visual arts.

The Kunsthochschule Kassel uses teaching formats in which students who are studying art education come together with others from the visual arts–which is generally seen as mutually enriching.

The position has the following requirements:

  • outstanding and original body of artistic work
  • several years of experience with international exhibitions
  • experience in interdisciplinary exhibition contexts and/or research collaborations
  • original text or artistic publications in art theoretical, art historical, or art critical contexts
  • pedagogical aptitude, validated by at least two semesters of teaching experience at the university level
  • readiness to teach across departments and disciplines
  • readiness to take part in the further development of the Kunsthochschule
  • meaningful addition to the teaching positions at the Kunsthochschule
  • increase of the superregional and international renown of the Kunsthochschule

Experience in other forms of contemporary education – beyond exhibition experience – is beneficial.

The current teaching load of the professorship is 18 semester hours per week (according to LVerpflV HE, the Hessian Ordinance on Teaching Duties), which can be fulfilled in the Visual Arts by supervising a class. The Kunsthochschule is characterized by a close proximity of the programs Visual Arts, Art Education, Art History and Aesthetics, Visual Communication, and Product Design, all of which collaborate in direct mutual exchange with the workshops.

Participation in academic self-management is one of the duties of the position, and as such, a readiness and capability to collaborate is expected of the candidate. The employment requirements according to §§ 67, 68 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) apply here.

The position may also be shared.

The necessary documents for applying are a teaching and working concept (max. 2 pages) as well as a description of the candidate’s own artistic practice (max. 2 pages). The teaching and working concept (max. 2 pages) should demonstrate the candidate’s pedagogical approaches as well as his or her ideas on cooperative and interdisciplinary work in teaching. The teaching concept should also describe how the breadth of the profile and the content defined in it will be communicated in the teaching process. In addition to the usual documents, a cover letter, CV, and portfolio should also be submitted.
