The University of Kassel is establishing a new and unique interdisciplinary center in the field of Sustainable Development and Transformation. The center will bring together top global research and teaching expertise across the entire thematic range of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as defined by the United Nations. The center aims to become a significant force in developing solutions to inspire and enable social transformations through scholarly research, effective networking and dedicated teaching. Contributing to this goal, we are seeking to the fill the position of a tenure-track professor (W1 salary level) “Global Political Economy of Labor, including Gender Relations.” The professorship will be affiliated with both the center and the Political Science Division in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

As an innovative and progressive educational institution with 25,000 students located in central Germany, the University of Kassel is undertaking a worldwide search for candidates to staff the new center. Since its foundation 50 years ago, the University of Kassel has established a strong reputation for engaged interdisciplinary study programs across a wide range of fields pertaining to critical issues of global politics and development.

Teaching responsibilities range from the Master’s programs “Labor Policies and Globalization,” “Global Political Economy and Development,” and “Political Science” to the undergraduate programs in Political Science (BA and teacher education) as well as to future degree programs of the center. The professorship will be expected to direct the Master’s program “Labor Policies and Globalization” within the framework of the Global Labor University Network.

The Faculty of Social Sciences and the new center offer a wide range of opportunities for cooperative research with the International Center for Development and Decent Work, the Global Partnership Network – two DAAD Excellence Centers for Exchange and Development –, the Maria Sibylla Merian International Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos as well as the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Women’s and Gender Studies. Research activities related to the SDGs 5, 8, and 10 will be expected.

Successful candidates will be prepared to commit to research and teaching activities while also contributing to the structured doctoral training programs in the relevant fields as well as to the academic self-administration of the University.

The potential appointee
• will be highly familiar with labor relations in its various forms (including formal and informal labor as well as
  reproductive work/care work) in a North-South perspective, to be demonstrated by the PhD thesis and (other)
• will demonstrate a good knowledge of international political economy and the politics of gender relations;
• will have completed a doctoral degree in the social sciences with a grade of “very good” or better;
• will demonstrate a very good command of English and a good command of German.

The employment and performance requirements apply pursuant to §§ 61, 64 of the Higher Education Act of Hessen. The fixed-term position is limited to a period of six years in accordance with §64(3) of the Higher Education Act of Hessen (“Qualifikationprofessur mit Entwicklungszusage”). Upon a positive tenure evaluation, a permanent W2 professorship will be conferred. This tenure-track professorship is funded by the Joint Federal Government-Länder Tenure-Track Program.
