A permanent full-time position is offered in the field of "Foreign Language Teaching and Learning Research of English", which is committed to the close integration of empiricism, theory and practice and focuses on the psycholinguistically based, empirical investigation of learning and teaching processes of English as a foreign language in contexts of second or third language acquisition, taking into account cognitive factors and the development of evidence-based implications for the teaching of English as a foreign language. We are looking for an academically proven personality with an outstanding international profile with practical and academic expertise in the focus of the chair on "Foreign Language Teaching and Learning Research of English" with an aim to build an excellent bridge between "theory-empiricism-practice". The teaching load for predominantly teaching activities (taking into account other service duties) is 14 hours per week (§3, LVerpflV HE 2013).


Tasks:

  • Content-related and conceptual collaboration in teaching and research. The focus of the future post holder will be on teaching in the field of teacher training in all teacher training courses in which the above-mentioned subject area is involved, including the supervision of students, taking examinations (course and final state examinations).
  • Research activities in fields of the subject area through active participation in the research projects (in particular cooperation in designing experiments, data collection at the schools and in the laboratory to be set up, as well as their scientific evaluation and analysis) and publication activities of the professorship "Foreign Language Teaching and Learning Research of English"
  • Support for third-party funded projects (incl. applying for funding and fund raising), in particular collaboration in data collection (at the schools and in the lab), as well as their scientific evaluation and analysis
  • Preparation and organization of scientific conferences, workshops, symposia and events.
  • Participation in academic self-administration and in the subject and study structure


Requirements:

  • Outstanding teaching degree in English with a focus on foreign language teaching and learning research or comparable degree (for international degrees also an M.Sc./M.Ed./M.A. in Second Language Acquisition, Multilingualism, Applied Linguistics or TESOL)
  • A relevant doctorate in a subject area within the empirical focus of the subject area. A quantitative orientation with larger data sets is an advantage. The required degree must be available by the recruitment date at the latest
  • Experience in (independent) teaching at schools and universities A track-record of publications (possibly in international and high-ranking journals), as well as of conference presentations in at least one of the following subject areas: Second/third language acquisition, cognitive approaches to grammar learning and teaching, comprehension processes in code-switching, attention and learning difficulties in foreign language acquisition.


Advantageous are:

  • Sound knowledge of the main areas of specialisation in the field of ‘Foreign language teaching and learning research: Didactics of the English language’ and experience with psycholinguistic research methods
  • Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding projects as well as the organisation and implementation of projects and interest in innovative, school-relevant topics
  • Interest in obtaining a further academic qualification in one of the above-mentioned subject areas in the field of "Foreign Language Teaching and Learning Research of English" (habilitation under the main supervision of Prof Angelovska) will be encouraged
  • Experience in cooperation with schools, centres for practical teacher training and other school or school-related institutions
  • Ability and interest in dealing with the heterogeneous learning requirements of pupils
  • Ability to work in a team, reliability, a structured approach and a high degree of independence in handling tasks as well as enjoyment in dealing with different groups of people
  • Strong organisational and coordination skills, e.g. experience in the preparation and organisation of academic conferences
  • Strong communication skills and excellent presentation and moderation skills, as well as thorough working style


Recruitment as a civil servant is only possible if the job holder is already a civil servant for life. In this case, the salary is based on the existing grade (A 13 HBesG).
