In research and teaching, the professorship is dedicated to the inter- and transdisciplinary examination of processes of socio-ecological transformation and associated social conflicts. It contributes to the theoretical and empirical understanding of the relationship between society, conflict and transformation towards sustainability. Research topic is the analysis of historical and current conflicts surrounding socio-ecological transformations. These are analyzed in their trans- and international references and with regard to the various conflict levels (micro-macro, local-global) and examined in their intersectional constellation with each other.


In order to empirically investigate social conflicts in socio-ecological transformation processes and to develop theoretical explanatory approaches, research should focus on one or more of the following levels: the actions of (state and non-state) actors, discourses, political-economic structures, institutions and organizational contexts. Possible topics could include: social inequalities from an intersectional perspective, socio-ecological justice, sustainable peace, sustainable ways of living (Lebensweisen), conviviality.

The professorship is jointly responsible for the interdisciplinary, cross-faculty Bachelor's degree program “Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaften – Sustainability Studies” and teaches in the sustainability-related BA and MA degree programs of the Faculty of Social Sciences. A teaching profile with project and participation-oriented courses is required. Teaching courses in English should be possible.

The professorship is located in the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences and is integrated into the Kassel Institute for Sustainability. A connection to legal, cultural, economic, technical and natural science approaches to sustainability research is expected.

We expect a sociological approach to conflicts in socio-ecological transformations and an interdisciplinary connection to political science and history in the Faculty of Social Sciences. A willingness to cooperate with non-university institutions in transfer-oriented teaching projects is also required. Successful acquisition of third-party funding and an outstanding publication record are expected and must be demonstrated.

  • Curriculum vitae, incl. list of publications and courses
  • List of publications, stating the three outstanding publications with regard to the denomination of the professorship
  • Research concept: Concept for planned focal points, research questions to be addressed, and integration into the Kassel Institute for Sustainability (length: 1-2 pages)
  • Teaching concept: Concept for own teaching in the context of the BA program “Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaften - Sustainability Studies” (length: 1-2 pages)
